DAVID MAISEL'S LIBRARY OF DUST
I came accross one of these photos and was so captivated by the beauty that I followed the link to find out as much as I could. The story behind these unique canisters is heartbreaking to say the least. They are from the Oregon State Insane Asylum, which was open from 1883-1970. They are the remains of over 5000 patients that died within their walls and were never claimed by their families or loved ones. The forgotten. They have been sitting in the same room for over a century and have taken on these truly unique patterns from corrosion. "5118 human souls refracting themselves, through metal into colour". Not one exactly the same. This is the unbroken cycle. The energy from all of us that lives on and on, transferring into other living things so that nothing is ever truly gone. They are no longer forgotten.
